I work at Sephora and although it seems intimidating, we are always there to answer your questions no matter what they are and help make you samples or give you a makeup lesson/consultation. No pressure! By the way, the reason we wear "cake loads" of makeup is because we have to. We are required to wear one item of face makeup, eye makeup, and a lip product. This is not only because we want to be creative with our makeup but also so we look the part. Would you take a make-up artist's advice if she herself weren't wearing anything? It's just like wearing a suit at the office.

I've spent quite a bit this year, but I LOVE everything I've bought so I'm not gonna complain.

I'm not a fan of in-store shopping at Sephora et al either, but their website is awesome, and you can return stuff if you don't like it. Shipments show up ridiculously fast too. I'm also obsessed with Lush right now, and their website is also awesome, as is their service. Even though I live in the US and the products are made in and mailed from Canada (near you, Krystal, I believe!), I've been amazed at how quickly a package arrives from them!

This past year, I splurged heavily on makeup, but my yearly makeup budget would certainly be less. I don't wear foundation or powder daily, just shadow, blush, and eyeliner. I'd estimate my annual makeup budget to be around $80.

Re: chap stick, have you ever tried just putting vaseline in one of those medicated cases after you run out? I've been doing that for years now and I find that it works even better than anything I buy.

Oh wow...I don't even like to think about my makeup budget!

I probably buy foundation 4x/year (4 x $15 = $60) and concealer twice a year (another $12).

Blush...maybe once a year. $10.

Mascara...$10/tube x 5= $50

Eyeliner...two pencils a year? $20

Eyeshadow...maybe $15/year max. These tend to last me forever but I do buy new compacts from time to time.

Powder...$25/year

Lip balms/glosses $20/year

So, that's over $200 a year. It seems like a lot, but I know people that spend that in one trip to Sephora or MAC.

Hmm, I bought blue, black, and purple eyeliner at a street fair for $2 each and that was my only purchase this year.

I do spend alot on face "stuff". I love tinted moisturizers and anything that promises to make me stay young ;) I'd say I spend about $100 to $125 a year on face creams. Gah.

Had a facial tonight and it got me thinking about makeup; they applied a Jane Iredale mineral makeup pressed powder afterwards and I absolutely LOVED it - price? $59. Ack!

I usually buy Cover Girl pressed powder (about $80/year) but am seriously considering the Jane Iredale. I wear powder all the time. The Jane Iredale would cost me pretty close to the same as what I'm paying now (only have to buy new compact every 4 to 6 months, according to esthetician).

Lipstick is bought over eBay (don't worry sealed packages and if you still think it's gross don't tell me 'cuz I'll get the heebie jeebies - I haven't had a problem yet!!); Clinique brand, and at about $6-$8 a tube (compared to $16 last time I checked at the department store). Probably $30/year. I am always wearing lipstick.

I'm one of those uses it for forever mascara types, spend maybe $15/year for 2 tubes of Cover Girl.

Blush lasts forever too, I don't remember when I bought my current compact (Clinique). So, $15/year?

Love chapstick (put it on at night but am thinking of switching to lanolin). $12/year?

Still have the L'Oreal makeup from the review I did so no cost for eyeliner or eyeshadow. $0/year

I do go through quite a few eyebrow brushes. I use my brow brush with every makeup touchup and despite cleaning both the brow section and the eyelash separators, they inevitably lose teeth. I've even had it where chunks of bristle will actually break off the brow shaper. Probably $20/year.

My make up spending is really low as well- I spend a fair bit on skin care but I hardly ever wear make up.
I buy under eye concealer for about $25 twice a year, and regular concealer for about $6 twice a year.
For mascara and eyeshadow I use the freebies that I get when I buy my skincare products at clinique bonus time.
The only other thing I use is lip balm (not sure if this really counts) at $7 twice a year.
So about $75 all told.

Sephora is amazing. It is really intimidating at first, but I've never really encountered an unpleasant employee there. They do free makeovers and you can also request a sample of pretty much anything. Even if they dont have samples from the company they will make you one. Like squirt some perfume into a little spray thing, or pour some moisturizer into a little pot. And they don't expect you to buy something to get a sample. If you are not a makeup junkie like me its probably best to just go in and ask someone for what you are looking for, otherwise you could get lost in there for hours and still not decide what you want. lol

All those magazines say that you should keep types of makeup around for a certain period of time because they will go bad (in particular, things with moisture in them like mascara, which you are supposed to throw out 3 or so months after you open it because the constant pumping of the wand in and out of the tube lets air in and the accumulation of bacteria grow. Dry/powdery products like blush, mineral foundation and eyeshadows last much longer). I admit I don't follow all the rules because I believe part of it is just a ploy to get you to spend more money, but I think a year using the same mascara tube is kind of gross.

Anyways, my contribution. I don't have an actual budget, however I splurge on certain products and save on others. For the most part, I think drugstore and department store products contain similar (if not identical) formulas, it's just a matter of brand (*cough* MAC) and packaging. Oh, and price of course! I invest the most in bronzers and blush because I wear it everyday and have found what suits me the best (NARS and Cargo), whereas I save on eyeliner (Revlon Colorstay) and mascara (Covergirl Lash Blast). I don't wear foundation or lipstick (although I love Burts Bees!).

Huh. I use the same tube of mascara for like a year! Eyeshadow lasts 3 years (so far…), and I've got a tube of eyeshadow that I've had since HIGH SCHOOL. Which was almost a decade ago. What's odd is that I wear these things 5 days a week! I wonder why it lasts so long? I got my blush 3 years ago, and while I wear it daily, I've barely made a dent.

FYI - Sephora is awesome in that if you are interested in a particular skin care line, you can request a sample, and they'll generally make one up for you right there in the store. Might not work out so well for you if you have to make a return trip to the States if you want to then buy it, though.

I get so much makeup for free (or make money on it) doing coupon deals. I just bought 50 Almay mascaras, 12 Foundations, and 7 eyeshadows for less than $20 (most of it will be sold or given in Christmas presents/donated). I think I get pretty good makeup too - Loreal, Almay, Physicians Formula, Revlon, etc. Allows me to experiment with what I like, and I never feel bad ditching anything. I am loving the new Almay Pure Blends line - does not irritate my skin/eyes at all (some makeups do).

I hardly ever wear any makeup, although my grown daughter and daughter-in-law took me makeup shopping a couple of years ago. I probably spent about $40, including brushes and eyelash curler.

Recently I bought a mirror for my purse (about $8) and 2 tubes of Maybelline mascara (packaged together) for maybe $10 or $12. And I usually buy 1 lipstick per year at MAC ($14). This summer I found a lipstick colour I liked in a drugstore in Penticton. I bought it and a bottle of nail polish in a very similar shade. I think the 2 together cost about the same as a MAC lipstick. Oh, yeah. Then when I used the polish I had to buy a bottle of remover to get the polish off afterwards. I think that's about it.

I went to Chicago for a wedding a few months back, got there and realized I had completely forgotten all of my make-up back in Atlanta. Made a run to the mall and spent $140 in Sephora. Thank God I had a gift card for $100 I still needed to use. It got me thinking though...I hardly ever wear make up, and I had never really bought it for myself before, always received it as gifts or purchased it w/gift cards. Makes me really thankful that I don't wear it every day, there's no way I could afford it! so I'd say I spend about 10 dollars a year on chapstick refills. And next time I forget my make-up when I'm out of town I'm just going to get one of those free makeovers at one of the make-up counters. Geez!
