Wow I am shocked at the range of auto insurance quotes I got. In BC you must get basic insurance with ICBC. Any other extended coverage can be with a private insurance company.
What I have now:
ICBC - $1,942 ($883 for basic + $1,059 for extended)
Quotes:
Coast Capital - $848 (total with basic = $1,731)
CDIDirect - $691 (total with basic = $1,574)
If I go with CDIDirect, that's a HUGE savings of $367 per year (or over $30/month)! It kind of makes me wonder if I could have been saving on insurance costs all these years with my other cars and my scooter.
I'm going to do a bit more research tonight and then tomorrow I will most likely switch over my extended coverage to CDIDirect. w00t!

Wow. I had no idea the savings were that much! I should switch mine over as well.
I use canadian direct insurance for all my coverage over the basic ICBC. My husband also uses them. The savings are significant.
PS - Is insurance more expensive in Vancouver than Victoria? I pay about $900 for mine and that's with all the bells and whistles. Even when I had a brand new car (6 years ago) it was only about $1000 (and that was before I discovered Canadian Direct - so that was straight from ICBC). I do have full safe driving discount and Road Star which gives about 43% discount I think.

Chickinvic: Yeah I knew insurance in Vancouver was more expensive than Victoria, but I had no idea it was this much more expensive. I have a 35% discount and I still pay an outrageous amount compared to my mom who has a 2 yr old Mazda 3 and pays about $80/month.
But I also haven't been driving for 10 years, so that definitely plays into it.
Greater Vancouver insurance is WAY higher, yeah. I'd also 'known' this, but was floored by how big the difference really was when I moved to Burnaby.
I think I jumped from 1030 to 1812 or so with a 40% discount the year I moved.
Didn't realize the extended coverage would make such a difference and since I'm not a 16-25 male any more, it's past time I looked into it.
