So, May's challenge is getting back to the basics - grocery shopping!

This month's challenge is to set a monthly grocery budget for yourself, and stick to it! If you would like to join me in my challenge, please leave a comment and indicate how much your budget is for.

I think this is a great challenge because not only will it make us think about the price of food that we're buying, but it's also going to make us more aware of what we're eating. I know that before I gave myself a $150 monthly grocery budget, I was buying such random things. Now when I go shopping, I know exactly what I'm going to buy.

I also found that by paying close attention to what I was buying, I end up eating a lot healthier. And that's really important to me. For example, now that I'm examining the price of the food that I'm buying, I'm also looking at the ingredients. The general rule of thumb for me is, if I don't know what the ingredients are that are listed on the package (or if the name is so long that I can't even pronounce it), then I don't buy it. There are some exceptions, but I'm always trying to find alternatives to those particular items.

Like always, at the end of every week I'll write a post, and you'll be able to let us all know how you're doing - how much money you've spent so far, and your thoughts on how this challenge has affected the way you shop for food.

My goal is to spend no more than $60 per week, or a monthly budget of $240 for a family of three. This includes taxable/non-grocery items like paper towels and laundry soap. I went to the store yesterday, and spent exactly $55! Unfortunately I forgot the milk, so there goes the $5 savings!

I've tried budgeting separately for non-grocery items, but it's too awkward. So now I spread these items throughout the month, and buy when there is a really good sale in bulk if I can. Buying in bulk can make you nuts too, if you don't limit yourself to focusing on one or two products at a time...hence the $60 per week limit.

    I'll join in at $120.

I've been spending $140 for the past few months, but for April I set it at $120 and I'm right on track to achieve that, so I'm pretty sure I can do it for May too. :)

    Nicole said...
Put me down for $250 (two people). I totally overdid this last month somehow...

    Amphritrite said...
I've been doing this for several months now - I'm in at $85 for May. That's $19/wk for 4 1/2 weeks, down from $20/wk in April.

It may not seem like much of a drop, but my $1 has the buying power of $4 with the way I shop, so really, I'm cutting back by about $20 on an already tight budget :)

    Great challenge. Mine is $150!

I'm in!! :) I will not spend more than $80 for the month on groceries.

This was my April version of your challenge too. I'll participate again, same goals $250 for 2 people.

My challenge was $150 for April, so let's say $125 for May !

    Thanks :)

Ooh I'm totally in for this one.
$300 for 2 people including non food items like soap and paper towel.

My current budget for 2 people is $150/week x 5 weekends in May = $750. This includes breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and all snacks (we don't eat out). However, I think I'd like to challenge myself to cut this down by $10/week for May so $700 total. The extra $50 can go toward credit card debt!

    Grad School Girl said...
$200 for me....Hopefully, cross your fingers.

    Rachelle said...
Oh twiggers's number made me feel better! I was budgeting $200 before my raise, now I budget $250. It really helps me not eat out if I let myself by things like steak and seafood, which are still cheaper than eating out and healthier when I cook it myself. I'm going to go with sticking to my $250 budget, since I've been going over lately. That includes toiletries and makeup since I buy them at the same place.

    TV Girl said...
I thought I was doing pretty good with $120, but I'm inspired by those people in the $80 range. Maybe it depends on where you live though.

I'll keep my official goal where it is, but I'm going to try to actually spend even less than that.

    pennypincher said...
I'm in. So far, over the past two months I have budgeted $200 for groceries and $100 for eating out. For this challenge, I am going to combine the two and budget $250 for both. And if I say the $50 it can go to cc debt. Keep the challenges coming.

Okay!! I am in! Put me down for 300.00 for two people. That sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

It's a start, and I can work down from that!

This is one category I am always blowing on our budget so count me in! My Money Story $300 for 3 people.

TV Girl - My $85/Mo is for one person (sometimes two, depending on who's staying over), and I live in Seattle. I definitely wouldn't say food is cheap here - spooty coffee snobs!

But, I will put in that I'm a seasoned coupon veteran and I work grocery and drugstore deals to my advantage. I'm a stockpiler on top of it.

Please, please, don't be intimidated by lower amounts! This one's you against you ;) We're just here for support ...and heck, if you can get some inspiration out of it, all the better!

I'll give it a go. $200 NZ for the month. (Not sure what that is in Canadian, but it's about $140 US dollars)

    sfordinarygirl said...
I'm going to shoot for $80 as well not including party expenses/food. I've got a 10lb bag of pinto beans, 5lbs of lentils, leftover turkey from thanksgiving in the freezer and a whole chicken to roast.

It seems tight but I've been good at not buying unnecessary stuff such as crackers, cookies and chips.

    sfordinarygirl said...
any chance at the end of the week you could post a sample of your meal plan?

i find eggs and lunch meat can sometimes be expensive, especially if i eat two eggs for breakfast.

Okay, I'm in for...$350 for four. My daughter doesn't need a lunch, but I pack for my fiancee, my son, and myself, and almost all dinners are eaten at home.

I'll shoot for $150 again. I'll be home all month, so it'll be a better test.

I'm going to give it a shot as well and setting $150 for the month (just 1 person), and I'll try to eat out as little as possible.

I've never broken out my grocery expenses from my other stuff, so this should be educational at the very least!

Great challenge, I'm in for $400 for a family of 5.

I usually set this limit but don't really track it very well, so this will be good for me.

    Amphritrite,

I'm not intimidated by the lower amounts. On the contrary, I'm inspired, and it's definitely working in my favor!

Seeing what you're doing in Seattle makes me challenge myself to do a little better than I've been doing, and that's a good thing. Yes, these challenges are for supporting each other, but the word "challenge" itself means we're striving to do better.

I'm buying for one person too. I live in Orange County, but I used to live in Seattle and as far as I can tell the cost of groceries is very similar. I get good use out of coupons as well, but I think with a little more diligence I could do even better.

Bottom line: I'm loving these challenges. Keep them coming! :)

I am going to have a lunch grocery challenge. I really should take my lunch to work but I make it and forget to bring it. I am challenging myself to stick to $6 per work day on lunches/coffee/anything I buy while at work!

You have officially inspired me. I read this post and have committed to staying within our budget for food this month. We've been overspending these days and I needed to read something like this to lead me back to reality. Having a secure budget is our insurance for the year and we needed to be better about it. Thank you!

I started a plan to spend $100 weekly for all household spending, for me, DH and a dog that mostly eats meat. I include all food, grocery items, health and beauty items, cleaning products, pet care, incidentals, small gifts and sometimes even gas depending how low our checking account gets.
So far, I am averaging $108 a week but keep hoping to go lower.

May is a 5 Saturday month, and we shop on Saturdays, so I need to multiply my weekly by 5. :)

    (Family of 4)
$100 per week = $400 for the month

    Wish me luck!

This will be my first budgeting challenge. I am graduating from college soon and need to get my finances in order so that I can successfully pay down my debt. This seems like an easy way to start on the right track. My grocery budget will be $120 (for 2 people) for May. I will add in $20 a week for eating out, since I often have to eat lunch outside of the house. So total my budget is $210 for May

My goal is $250 for the month, includes 2 adults (one vegetarian and one meat eater) and my 4 y.o. stepson who we have on weekends. I include my paper products/toiletries in that budget, too.

Alright, I'm in for my first challenge.

I'll target $95/week at the grocery store for my household of two.

We're often above that amount, sometimes below, but we've been very good lately about getting big hunks of meat when they're on sale.

Family of 4 in France, 700$/450euros per month groceries, items for bathroom, kitchen etc. Prices going up, up, up for milk, yogurts, pasta... let's not talk about the French baguette... I try not to overspend by establishing my menu for the week and then try to stick to what I bought... not easy to be disciplined though! I will try to make it 700$ even with coming price increases.
    Your blog is inspiring!

Wow, I am surprised at how low some people are setting their budget goals! I'm just one person, but I usually end up spending close to $200 a month. Because groceries are one of the few items in my budget that I actually could reduce, I'd love to bring it down to about $100. But I'm going to make a little easier on myself this first time around, so my May goal is $125.
